If you're staying in New Zealand for more than a few weeks, get to know the public libraries. Especially in that early stretch when you're hopping between Airbnbs before finding a flat, a library — with free Wi-Fi, magazines and a warm place to sit — is a lifesaver. Wellington has a branch in nearly every suburb, along with community noticeboards and printing and copying services.
Good to know: the Central Library is still closed
The big Central Library next to City Gallery has been closed since 2019 over earthquake-strength concerns. Much of the collection moved to branches like Johnsonville, and the CBD service now revolves around picking up and returning online reservations. If you turn up downtown expecting a huge collection, you may be surprised how small the temporary space is — choose your branch based on what you need.
A free library card unlocks a lot
A card is free to make, and much of what it unlocks works from home, not just in the building.

- Newspapers & magazines from around the world — free daily reading via PressReader, often including Japanese and other international titles.
- Language learning — the Mango language app is free with your card.
