If you only visit one indoor attraction in Wellington, make it Te Papa Tongarewa — the Museum of New Zealand. It regularly ranks among the world's best museums, and yet entry is free (short-term special exhibitions aside). It's big enough that locals happily come back again and again.
"Te Papa Tongarewa" is Maori for "the place of treasures of this land" — and it lives up to the name, gathering the country's nature, history and culture under one roof. Think of it as the front door to understanding New Zealand.

Don't miss: Gallipoli — The Scale of Our War
The standout is the Gallipoli exhibition on Level 2. Gallipoli was the WWI campaign in which New Zealand and Australia fought their first major overseas battle, at a devastating cost.
The exhibition's giant figures were built by Weta Workshop — the film effects studio behind The Lord of the Rings. Six enormous, hyper-detailed soldiers and nurses stop visitors in their tracks; many people say they've never seen museum models of this standard anywhere. Rather than dwelling on horror, the storytelling pulls you in — compelling even if war history isn't usually your thing.
New Zealand's wartime history rarely features in school lessons or Hollywood films, which makes this beautifully crafted telling of it all the more worthwhile.
