Rental e-scooters can be a convenient option for short trips in some New Zealand cities, but operators, prices and service areas change. Check the operator's app in the city you are visiting instead of assuming that the same company operates nationwide.
Before starting a rental
- Download the current operator's official app.
- Review the price, service boundary, slow zones and no-parking areas shown in the app.
- Inspect the tyres, brakes, lights and handlebar before unlocking.
- Read the controls printed on that scooter. Throttle and brake layouts vary by model.
Rental pricing is normally shown in the app and may include an unlock charge plus a time-based rate. Compare the estimated total with walking or public transport, especially for longer journeys.
New Zealand road rules
An e-scooter that meets New Zealand's low-powered vehicle requirements can be used without registration or a driver licence. It may be ridden on the footpath or road. From 1 October 2026, qualifying e-scooters are also permitted in cycle lanes under New Zealand's new lane-use rules. Local restrictions and operator geofencing still apply.
On a footpath, ride carefully, keep left, use a safe speed and give way to everyone else. You may need to stop or dismount in a busy area. On the road, stay as close as practicable to the edge. A helmet is recommended, although it is not currently a legal requirement for a qualifying e-scooter.
Parking responsibly
End the ride only in a place allowed by the app. Leave a clear path for pedestrians, wheelchairs, mobility devices and prams. Do not block building entrances, crossings, bus stops or tactile paving. Some councils and operators require a parking photo.
Safety tips
- Wear a helmet and avoid riding after drinking alcohol.
- Slow down around pedestrians, blind corners and driveways.
- Use lights after dark and avoid holding a phone while moving.
- Do not carry a passenger unless the device is specifically designed and permitted for one.
- Follow lower speed zones and no-ride areas shown in the app.
