"There's no Amazon in New Zealand" — it's one of the first surprises for anyone considering a move or long stay here. If you're used to one-click ordering back home, brace yourself: Amazon has no local service in New Zealand (as of August 2026).
Don't worry, though. New Zealand has plenty of convenient alternatives and its own shopping culture. This guide covers everything you need to shop smart in NZ.
Why Doesn't New Zealand Have Amazon?
With a population of only about 5 million, New Zealand's market is simply too small — building fulfillment centres and a delivery network here apparently doesn't pencil out for Amazon. The company currently prioritises larger markets like Japan, the US, Europe, and Australia, leaving NZ outside its service area.
Can You Order from Amazon in New Zealand?
Yes — there's no New Zealand Amazon store, but you can order from overseas Amazon sites and have items delivered to New Zealand.
- Amazon.com.au (Australia): Since 2021, Amazon Australia has shipped directly to New Zealand. Eligible items sold or fulfilled by Amazon AU qualify for free international shipping on orders of AU$59 or more. Prices shown include New Zealand's 15% GST, so you usually won't pay tax again on delivery. Prime delivery benefits don't apply to New Zealand addresses, and some third-party sellers don't ship to NZ — check the delivery details on each product page.
- Other Amazon stores: Amazon sites in other countries, such as Amazon.com in the US and Amazon.co.jp in Japan, also ship eligible items internationally. Shipping costs and free-shipping thresholds depend on the destination, so check at checkout.
- Prime Video and Kindle: Prime Video is available in New Zealand, although the catalogue differs from other countries. Kindle books you've bought can be read in New Zealand through the app.

The Warehouse
New Zealand's largest retail chain, with physical stores plus an online shop covering appliances, household goods, clothing, toys, and more. Prices are reasonable — it's the go-to budget everything-store of NZ. You can also order online and pick up in store.
Mighty Ape
NZ's biggest online shop for gaming, electronics, and entertainment. It focuses on game titles, consoles, and PC gaming, but also carries books, movies, and toys — essentially your Amazon gaming department, Kiwi-style.
PB Tech
An online retailer specialising in computers, smartphones, and accessories. For PCs and electronics, PB Tech has the best selection and competitive prices, with physical stores in major cities including Wellington and Auckland.
Woolworths (formerly Countdown)
The supermarket chain Countdown rebranded as Woolworths from 2023. Its online ordering and delivery service, bringing groceries and household essentials straight to your door. Delivery fees vary by order size, and orders over a certain amount can qualify for free delivery.
Looking for Japanese Products?
If you're after Japanese food, cosmetics, or homewares, here are your options:
- Asian supermarkets: Several in central Wellington, stocking Japanese seasonings, instant noodles, snacks, and more
- Daiso: There's a store in Wellington's CBD. It's Japan's famous 100-yen shop, though prices here run around NZ$4–6 per item
- Japan Centre Online (UK-based): An online store for Japanese food and goods that ships internationally, including to NZ
- iHerb: International online shopping for supplements and organic products, with relatively fast and affordable delivery to NZ
Shopping In Person
Brick-and-mortar shopping culture remains strong in New Zealand — often more so than online. Wellington has several key shopping areas:
