Getting there from the CBD
Weta is in Miramar, a peninsula suburb a little way from central Wellington. From Wellington Station or Courtenay Place, hop on a Miramar-bound bus (route 2 runs frequently) and get off near Miramar Shops — it's a few minutes' walk from there. Driving takes about 20 minutes. Popular sessions sell out, so book online in advance.
What the Weta Cave tour is like
The classic option is the roughly 45-minute guided tour. Show your booking at the desk, collect your receipt, and a guide gathers the group at the start time. Photography is not allowed through most of the tour.
The best part is hearing how and why things get made. In an age when CGI can conjure any prop, Weta still obsesses over weight, texture and material realism — because it changes how actors perform. Prototypes sometimes start life as ordinary kitchen utensils repurposed for shape ideas; those behind-the-scenes details are what make the tour. The guides talk fast, but ask about a film you love or a technique and they'll happily go deep.
In the final room you can actually touch real weapons, armour and creature models — the lifelike skin and hair textures are extraordinary. The shop at the exit stocks serious collectors' pieces, including large-scale film figures.
